If after receiving your property valuation notice you believe your property value or classification is incorrect, the following options for appeal are available to you.
Homestead is a classification granted to properties that are owner-occupied, lowering taxes on that property.
The value of your property is determined by its market value. Simply put, market value is the price that your property would sell for if placed on the open market.

The City has had a number of taxpayers inquire as to why their values and taxes increased for 2016. The article “Fourteen Reasons Why Property Taxes Vary From Year To Year” (PDF) (from the Minnesota Association of Counties) may help in understanding the variables that go into determining property values and ultimately your taxes.
Each November, property owners receive Truth in Taxation notices showing how the proposed tax levy for the coming year will affect their property taxes. This notice includes the dates and times of all public meetings that will be held to discuss and approve the proposed tax levy. The Truth in Taxation hearing for each year's City of Hopkins' tax levy is held the previous December.
