Connections - A Weekly Update from the City of Hopkins

Board and Commission Application Deadline is April 24

Interested in serving your community? The City of Hopkins is seeking applicants to serve on our boards and commissions. Boards and commissions perform a vital role in the life of our community. Many of the City’s decisions, policies, and procedures are founded on recommendations from a board or commission. The City currently has openings on the Planning and Zoning Commission, Park Board and Charter Commission. Learn more about City boards and commissions, and apply online. The deadline to apply is April 24.

Wireless Emergency Alerts Testing is April 26

On Wednesday, April 26, Hennepin County Emergency Management will be testing the Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) system. WEA is a public safety system that allows customers who own compatible mobile devices to receive geographically targeted, text-like messages alerting them of imminent threats to safety in their area. The WEA test will commence at noon on April 26. Residents that have their phones set for these alerts will receive an alert on that day.

Arbor Day Celebration is April 28

Join the City, the Hopkins Park Board and Heritage Shade Tree Consultants at the Hopkins Pavilion on Friday, April 28, from 1 to 2 p.m., to celebrate Arbor Day and learn how to take care of newly planted trees. The first 50 attendees will receive a free tree.

Free Yard Waste Pick-Up is May 1-11

Yard waste will be collected for free on your regular garbage day May 1-11. You do not need to call to schedule this pick-up. Bagged yard waste should be placed at your normal collection site at least four feet away from your garbage, organics and recycling containers. After May 11, bags will be collected on Thursdays and must display yard waste stickers, which are available for purchase at City Hall or Public Works. Find more information about yard waste pick-up.

Hopkins Activity Center Bike Club Kick-Off is May 3

Join other active adults for the Hopkins Activity Center’s Bike Club with weekly rides through the fall. The season begins with a Kick Off event on Wednesday, May 3, at 5:30 p.m. with a short ride starting and ending at Maetzold Field. There will be a brief bike safety presentation by the Hopkins Police and a bike maintenance demonstration by Tonka Cycle with door prizes for those in attendance.

The Activity Center's Bike Club sets out for trips to local dining hot spots, landmarks and scenic nature areas each week. Two types of rides are offered -- simply choose your level of intensity:

• Active Rides on Monday mornings: Riders travel about 25-35 miles

Register for Bike Club and weekly rides are free.
